Marvel as you walk past steaming fumeroles and pools of mud at boiling temperatures of over 100 degrees. Then head to the spa and relax in a nourishing geothermal mud bath and sulphur pool, cooling off under the natural spring waterfall. Used by local Maori for bathing and relaxation for 800 years.
Hells Gate Geothermal Park is Rotorua’s most active geothermal area featuring a walkway lined with unique geothermal wonders and interactive opportunities. See, feel and understand the awe of Irish Playwright, George Bernard Shaw as he gazed upon the land and gave it the English name "Hellsgate" as he believed he had arrived at the gates to Hell. Start your day with an awe-inspiring walk through the reserve and experience the primeval display of Earth's awesome raw power and its geothermal nature. Experience the geothermal features with a self guided map to show you around or join a guided tour of the reserve to learn more about the history, features and uniqueness of the geothermal area.
After learning about the unique healing muds of Hells Gate during your walk of the geothermal area, experience this for yourself at New Zealand’s historic spa experience - the Hells Gate Mud Bath and Spa. The natural geothermal mud can be liberally smoothed over the skin while relaxing in the warm sulphurous waters for 20 minutes. The mud bath is followed by a cool shower which helps restore blood circulation before relaxing in the hot sulphur mineral spas. The warm geothermal mud opens and cleans the skin’s pores, while the sulphur spa’s give your skin a gentle exfoliation and deep cleansing, leaving your skin clean, soft and smooth to touch.
