Major attractions in New Zealand include glowworm caves, film sets, Māori cultural evenings and dark sky stargazing. Start with the places that put each region on the map, from Waitomo and Hobbiton to Mt Cook and Tekapo. Book one for yourself, or give it as a gift with the date left to them.
If it's your first time in New Zealand, start with the places that put it on the map. These major attractions range from the Waitomo glowworm caves and the Hobbiton Movie Set to the All Blacks Experience, a night under the Mt John stars and a gondola over Christchurch. Here's a guide, region by region.
In Auckland, the All Blacks Interactive Experience is an hour-long guided tour with the haka on a four metre screen and an interactive zone to test your rugby skills. The Odyssey Sensory Maze has 13 sensory rooms, and the Weta Workshop special effects workshop has you making prosthetic wounds for 60 minutes. The Pukekawa glowworm tour is a one hour walk in an ancient volcanic park. North of the city, Sculptureum Galleries and Gardens in Matakana has over 800 works and 1.4km of sculpture pathways.
For day trips from Auckland, the Hobbiton Movie Set day tour includes a 2.5 hour walk through 12 acres and a drink at the Green Dragon Inn, and the Waitomo glowworm caves day tour adds a boat ride through the caves. Both need at least four people to run. Further north, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds tour and performance is a two day pass with a guided tour, a cultural performance and two museums, and the Bay of Islands half day cruise visits the Hole in the Rock and Otehei Bay. See more things to do in Auckland and the Bay of Islands.
Waitomo is home to New Zealand's best known caves. The Waitomo Glowworm Cave tour is a boat ride under thousands of glowworms and a walk through Cathedral Cave, with stories about Māori culture. Choose adult, child or family tickets. It takes about 45 minutes, and photography isn't allowed.
For more, the Ruakuri Cave guided tour is two hours with a dramatic spiral entrance and cave formations, and you'll need your own transport. The Black Labyrinth is three hours of black water tubing, and the five hour Black Abyss adds abseiling and a zipline. Both are beginner level. See more things to do in Waitomo.
The Mitai Māori cultural experience is three hours with warriors on a waka, the haka and a hāngī meal. At Velocity Valley, the Vertigo Free Fall is a 43 metre drop into a safety net, and the ZORB globe ride rolls you downhill in a giant ball. See more things to do in Rotorua.
The Weta Workshop experience tour is a 90 minute look behind the scenes at the studio's props and effects. It suits all ages, and photography isn't allowed in the tour spaces. See things to do in Wellington.
In Christchurch, the Christchurch Gondola rides 862 horizontal metres of cableway with 360 degree views, and the Port Hills chair lift day pass climbs to the top of the hills. In Dunedin, the penguins and wildlife guided tour visits a reserve with one of the rarest penguins in the world. In Hanmer Springs, thermal pools entry includes a lazy river, a lap pool and hydro slides.
For the mountains, the full day Mount Cook tour via Tekapo leaves from Christchurch and visits the Church of the Good Shepherd, and the Mt John Observatory stargazing is 100 minutes in an International Dark Sky Reserve, for ages seven and up. In Queenstown, the 60 minute KJet ride runs up to 95km/h and the Odysseum is an hour of sensory rooms. At Te Anau, the guided glowworm caves tour crosses the lake by boat and is open to ages five and up. See Christchurch, Queenstown and Te Anau.
