Your adventure begins with a scenic cruise across the tranquil waters of Lake Te Anau aboard one of our purpose-built catamarans, taking you to the remote western shores. At Cavern House, explore fascinating displays that uncover the caves’ geology and history before your guide leads you into the underground labyrinth. Along the way, our knowledgeable guides will highlight the caves’ unique features and share captivating stories about their formation and discovery. Step into a world of natural wonder. These geologically young caves, just 12,000 years old, are still being shaped by the powerful river carving through them. Marvel at twisting limestone passages, sculpted rock formations, swirling whirlpools, and a thundering underground waterfall.

The journey culminates in a hidden grotto, where you’ll drift silently by boat beneath a sparkling canopy of glowworms unique to New Zealand. In the stillness and darkness of this subterranean realm, their bioluminescent display is nothing short of extraordinary.

FAQ: What should I know about natural hazards when visiting Milford Sound? Piopiotahi Milford Sound is one of the world's most spectacular natural environments, and with that comes some natural hazard risk. While the likelihood of a large earthquake or tsunami occurring during your visit is extremely low, particularly on a short visit, these events can pose a serious risk.

What should I do in the event of an earthquake or landslide? If you experience an earthquake that feels LONG or STRONG – Get GONE. Move up and away from waterways (the fiord and rivers) as quickly as possible. If you see or hear a landslide, do the same.

  • Change your booking up to 24 hours before the start time of your experience
  • Changes are not permitted within 24 hours of your experience
  • Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

In the event of rain or inclement weather your experience will still go ahead unless contacted by the experience provider. If your experience is cancelled you will be rescheduled by the provider.

Great experience to see glowworms

Travelled by boat to an island and then broken into smaller groups to go through the glowworms caves. This included a boat ride to see the glow worms. If you have back problems it could be an issue as walking through the caves to do have to get down low under some of the rocks. Also to make sure each tour guide explains to keep quiet when on the boat as this affects the glow worms coming out. Was a great tour and experience
