Commercial bungy jumping started in New Zealand, and the best jumps are still here. Leap from the Kawarau Bridge, drop 134 metres at the Nevis, or touch the Waikato River in Taupō. Not ready to jump? There are swings, a catapult and free falls too. Book one for yourself or give it as a gift and let them pick the day.
Commercial bungy jumping started in New Zealand, and the country still has the jumps people travel for. Queenstown has the best known, Taupō has one that touches the river, and Rotorua, Auckland and Hanmer Springs each have a drop of their own. Here's where to find them, and how to choose.
Queenstown has the widest range. The Kawarau Bridge bungy is a 43 metre jump off the historic bridge, with the option to dip your head in the river. It's open to ages 10 and up, and a t-shirt is included. For the same height on a swing, the Kawarau Bridge giant swing has solo, tandem and triple options from age eight.
Out at the Nevis, the 134m Nevis bungy is billed as New Zealand's highest, with 8.5 seconds of freefall over the Nevis River. The Nevis Swing arcs 300 metres across the canyon at up to 120km/h, and the Nevis Catapult launches you 150 metres across the valley at almost 100km/h. Can't decide? The Nevis bungy and swing combo does both. The Nevis is 45 minutes from town, and bungy jumpers there must be at least 13. See more bungy jumping in Queenstown.
The Taupō bungy jump drops 47 metres over the Waikato River, and it's billed as New Zealand's highest water touch bungy. You can choose to dip your head or your whole body. It's five minutes from the town centre, and open to ages 10 and up. The cliff-face giant swing reaches up to 70km/h, with a surprise release or a countdown. See more bungy jumping in Taupō.
Rotorua's drop has no cord at all. The Vertigo Free Fall is a 43 metre vertical drop into a safety net, with about four seconds of fall. It needs a minimum age of 10 and a weight of at least 45kg.
For more than one ride, Velocity Valley sells passes you can use on the Agrojet, Shweeb Racer, Swoop swing and Freefall Xtreme. Choose a one ride pass, a two activity pass, a four ride pass or the six ride family pass to share with up to six people. Height and age limits vary by ride. See more things to do in Rotorua.
Auckland's high drops aren't traditional bungy, but they're the closest the city has. The Sky Tower SkyJump is a seated harness drop of 192 metres on a controlled wire, solo or tandem. The Sky Tower ride and descent takes you up the outside of the tower first, then drops you back down at speed. Both include photos and video, and the minimum age is 10. In the South Island's alpine resort town, the Hanmer Springs bungy is a 35 metre drop towards the Waiau River, about 90 minutes north of Christchurch. The minimum age is 12 and the minimum weight 35kg, and a t-shirt and certificate are included. Make a day of it with more things to do in Hanmer Springs.

The Nevis bungy near Queenstown is billed as New Zealand's highest, at 134 metres, with 8.5 seconds of freefall.
The minimum age depends on the jump: 10 at the Kawarau Bridge and in Taupō, 12 in Hanmer Springs and 13 at the Nevis. Children aged 14 and under need an adult to sign consent at check in, and weight limits apply, so check each product page.
Only if you choose to. At the Kawarau Bridge you can dip your head in the river, and at Taupō you can dip your head or your whole body.
