This is the ultimate Waitomo Caves adventure and is perfect for the natural born adrenalin junkies.

Meet your expert guides and get kitted out with all the safety equipment for your journey. Then, descend into the seemingly bottomless black depths of the glow worm studded Ruakuri Cave. This five hour expedition combines a 35 metre abseil, climbing, whizzing down a flying fox and cave tubing underneath glow worms into one unforgettable journey.

Important information

  • Please allow five hours for this experience
  • Tours run on Saturdays and Sundays only at 9am

Participants must be over 16 years of age and weigh more than 45kg.

  • Water temperature will likely be 10-14 degrees celcius
  • This is a beginner level experience
  • Change your booking up to 24 hours before the start time of your experience
  • Changes are not permitted within 24 hours of your experience
  • Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

There is a minimum of two people and a maximum of 8 people for this experience.

This experience is subject to weather conditions.

Amazing adventure

We had the most amazing time, the guides were super nice and funny and the tour itself was much more hands on than expected! The guides were great at trusting us and letting us trust ourselves to give everything a go. This was an amazing adventure that you wouldn’t get to experience elsewhere, would absolutely recommend doing the black abyss- worth it for sure!

Overall experience was not worth the cost

We ventured into the caves in a small group, there was multiple stops throughout the tour where we were waiting around because we clashed with other groups. The whole experience took 4 hours from start to finish. Although the host were very humourous at points we found them unprofessional. The caves themselves were beautiful and we were glad to have seen them but would not do this experience again for the money we paid.
