This walk or hike takes you on an ecology-focused adventure of the craters of this beautiful valley. As you walk through the youngest eco-systems in the world you will see a range of geothermal activity, native plants and bird-life - sights not to be missed!

What's included?

  • 4km self guided walk
  • 45 minute cruise on Lake Rotomahana
  • Shuttle transfer back to the visitors centre

Visit the youngest geothermal system in the world and walk through the native flora and fauna. It is a 4km walk through the wildlife sanctuary and visits features such as the Frying Pan Lake, the largest hot spring in the world, Cathedral Rocks, Inferno Crater and Warbrick Terraces.

At the end of the walk is Lake Rotomahana, where you will board the Ariki Moana for a 45 minute cruise. You will see thermal activity and native bird life, all while receiving a full commentary from the skipper about what you are seeing and the history of the lake and the Mount Tarawera eruption.

At the end of the cruise a shuttle bus will be waiting to take you back to the visitor centre.

This experience is part of the Responsible Range as it was awarded a Qualmark Enviro-Gold endorsement.

  • Please allow 3.5 hours for this whole experience
  • Begin your 2 hour self-guided walking tour at any of the following times so to allow enough time reach the boat cruise; 8.30am, 9.30am, 11.10am, 12.00pm, 12.50pm, 1.30pm
  • Bookings are essential
  • Adult: 17 years +
  • Children: 6-16 years
  • Children must be accompanied by at least one paying adult
  • Change your booking up to 48 hours before the start time of your experience
  • Changes are not permitted within 48 hours of your experience
  • Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

Please bring with you good walking shoes, sub block, water and a warm jacket.

There is a licenced Café on onsite as well a souvenir store with a large range of New Zealand Made souvenirs.

This experience takes place at Lake Rotomahana, 25 minutes from Rotorua.

Fantastic geothermal walk

Despite the boat cruise being cancelled and refunded without any problems, there was so much to enjoy along the geothermal walk. I recommend walking up the stairs to Inferno crater (site 4 on their map) even if you intend to skip sites 5, 6, & 7 (you can return back down the stairs and carry on to site 8. It's only a few steps up to Inferno crater). Highly recommend this, and look forward to doing it again hopefully with the boat up and running.
