Ever wondered what Mount Vesuvius was like before it erupted? You can walk on New Zealand's only live marine volcano, close to the hissing, sulphuric bubbling inner crater of this unique and volatile landscape. In warmer weather, you can enjoy a swim in the surrounding Bay of Plenty!
After being greeted by your friendly crew, you’ll board the vessel for a 90-minute cruise across the pristine waters of the Bay of Plenty. During the trip, you’ll be issued with your safety equipment – a hard hat and gas mask – for use whilst on the island and may have the opportunity to witness some of the area’s abundant marine life.
Once at the island, the skipper will anchor and you’ll be transferred in small groups via an inflatable boat. There you’ll disembark directly into the crater complex where your experienced and knowledgeable guides will take you on a fascinating guided tour to explore the inner crater. You’ll get up close to roaring steam vents, bubbling pits of mud, hot volcanic streams, the amazing lake of steaming acid, and learn about the volcanos tragic mining history.
After the tour, lunch will be served back on the boat as you cruise and see the outer walls of the island, abundant with Pohutukawa and Australasian Gannet colonies. The area is also home to dolphins, whales, and other marine life, and viewing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is a great way to end the day.
