Step back in time and travel along the 'Forgotten Railway' in a self driven buggy. Driving the entire length of the historical Stratford-Okahukura railway over 2 days allows you to see the true majesty of the beautiful countryside found in this part of NZ. Lunch and snacks are provided both days.
Travel through breaktakingly beautiful countryside on the now decommissioned Stratford-Okahukura railway and take a step back in time. You'll drive the entire rail track from Okahukura to Whangamomona - or the other way depending on where you decide to begin the course and where you've booked your overnight accommodation - gliding along tracks that once carried trains that transported stock and supplies.
Stopping along the way you'll learn about the history of the railway and it's almost 30 year construction, starting in 1902. The self drive tour is designed so you can choose when to slow down and take in the sights and speed up. You'll take in stunning views and travel through all the tunnels and cross 98 bridges. You'll also pass through the depleted settlements of Matiere and Ohura, see the stunning Tangarakau Gorge.
You will be provided morning tea, afternoon tea and lunch on both days and your overnight bag will be transported to your chosen overnight accommodation (not included in the price and to be organised by you) so you don't have to travel in the buggy with it.
Please note: the return travel is not included in the price. You will need to pay $50 to get on the return shuttle bus once your experience finishes. You will also need to organise your own overnight accommodation in Whangamomona, the experience provider can help in suggesting suitable hotels/motels. You must specify which tour you want as you can start at Taumarunui or Stratford.
