What better way to explore to wonderous Bay of Islands than in a private Jeep tour?
This "Rebel Ride" tour visits the Train Town of Kawakawa, home of the famous Hundertwasser Art toilets (Google it!), and takes in the fabulous countryside, historic settlements and subtropical forests surrounding the Bay of Islands in Northland.
You’ll depart from the Paihia waterfront and stop in the seaside port of Opua before engaging the Jeep's 4WD and traversing unsealed roads to get to the Opua Forest for a 20-minute walk. Here you can see the magnificent kauri trees and native bush along a well-formed trail.
Next, trek down to the quirky town of Kawakawa where a historic railway line passes through town right down the middle of State Highway 1. Kawakawa is also the home of the famous Hundertwasser toilets which were renovated in 1999-2000 by artist Fredrich Hundertwasser and the local community. It is his only southern hemisphere building and his last project before his death.
Then your tour will head through rural farmland, stopping at Henry Williams' beautiful church in Pakaraka. Pass volcanic landscapes and sites of ancient pa, Maori fortified villages, on our way to the famous horseshoe shaped Haruru Falls.
Top off the tour with a photo stop of the Bay from the Waitangi lookout before finishing back in Paihia.
