Discover the historical gold mining town of Macetown, a township first settled in the early 1860s during the gold rush around Arrow River. This tour is a true “4x4” off road adventure, driving off road, through rivers and along trails on the way to Macetown. Beginning with the picturesque town of Arrowtown, you will pass by the historic Chinese Settlers Village and the filming location of the “Ford of Bruinen” in the Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring.

Experience the narrow, rugged road in the safety of a 4WD, crossing the Arrow River some 25 times in each direction. Once in Macetown explore the remains of the township including a restored bakery, stone cottage and the only stamping battery with an iron frame in Otago. Long since abandoned after the gold rush, Macetown has now been transformed into a reserve. Immerse yourself in the history of this fascinating region by panning for gold while your guides describe the hardship and exhilaration these miners faced.

On the return journey back to Arrowtown along the Macetown Track, you will get to try your hand at gold panning in the Arrow River, as you learn the techniques to pan for gold and feel the excitement that drew many people to this area during the gold rush of the 1800s.

This experience is part of the Responsible Range as it was awarded an Enviro-Gold endorsement.
