Explore Oneke at dusk, learning Maori and European history before searching for wild Rakiura tokoeka kiwi after dark. Enjoy coastal scenery, cultural storytelling and a warming drink in the whare before returning to Oban. A unique, small?group wildlife and cultural experience.
Discover the magic of Rakiura as day turns to night on the Wild Kiwi & Culture Encounter, an immersive journey through the history, landscapes, and wildlife of Oneke — also known as “The Neck.” This special part of Stewart Island is home to rich Maori heritage, early European stories, and the remarkable Rakiura tokoeka, one of New Zealand’s only truly wild and naturally roaming kiwi. Your experience begins with a guided exploration of Oneke’s coastal environment. As the light softens, your guide shares korero about the island’s Maori and European history, cultural significance, and the deep connection this region holds for local kiwi. The combination of storytelling, landscape, and lingering daylight sets a tranquil mood for what comes next.
As night falls, your group begins the search for wild kiwi. Moving quietly along forested tracks and open coastal areas, your guide will help you listen for calls, watch for movement, and understand kiwi behaviour. The Rakiura tokoeka are large, curious, and active at night, offering one of the best opportunities in the world to observe kiwi in their natural habitat — respectfully and without disturbance. Midway through the experience, enjoy a moment of warmth and connection inside the whare (Maori building). Relax with a hot cocoa, tea, or coffee while learning more about Rakiura’s culture, community, and environment before continuing your adventure.
