  • Half day tour visiting Skippers Canyon and surrounds
  • Visit historic sites along the way
  • Immerse yourself in the history of Skippers

This is a half-day tour visits the historic mining town of Skippers, with historic sights along the way. View the Shotover River Valley from up high, take photos of the incredible century-old suspension bridge, Skippers Bridge, and immerse yourself in the history of a bygone mining era.

What's Included?

  • Half day guided tour to Skippers Canyon and surrounds
  • Explore the abandoned mining township of Skippers
  • Stop off to try gold panning at Deep Creek

This half day heritage tour departing Queenstown, heads out of town towards Coronet Peak mountain, taking in panoramic views over the Wakatipu Basin, before following the rugged and once treacherous Skippers Road, a thoroughfare that was hacked by hand into the sheer cliff sides of the Shotover River Valley. On entering Skippers Canyon, visit Lighthouse Rock for a dramatic lookout over the canyon.

Follow in the footsteps of adventurers and discoverers as this historical winding road leads to the historic Skippers Bridge. After negotiating the drive over this narrow suspension bridge, the road continues into the old township of Skippers. Long since abandoned, several original buildings remain waiting to be explored in this romanticised mining town. Immerse yourself in the history of this place as the restored schoolhouse and old homestead divulge a wealth of information through photos, relics and artefacts from the early days of this settlement. The nearby cemetery depicts a more gloomy and dangerous life for these gold prospectors. On the return journey, stop at Deep Creek where you can test your luck panning for gold in one of the richest gold bearing rivers in the world.
