Travelling in purpose-built 4WD vehicles, your experienced local guide navigates this awe-inspiring canyon while sharing stories of the pioneers and miners who once lived and worked here. Enjoy a combination of scenic viewpoints and historic sites, gaining insight into the engineering feats and challenging conditions of early life in Skippers Canyon. This engaging experience blends heritage and scenery and is suitable for families.

Take a scenic half-day 4WD tour into historic Skippers Canyon from Queenstown. Travel the legendary Skippers Road, hand-built during the Otago gold rush and carved into the cliffs above the Shotover River. Departing Queenstown, the journey travels toward Coronet Peak before descending into the canyon, with expansive views across the Wakatipu Basin. Visit Lighthouse Rock lookout, stop at key historic mining sites, and enjoy photo opportunities including views of the iconic Skippers Suspension Bridge. Morning or afternoon tea is included. On the return journey, try traditional gold panning at Deep Creek on one of the region’s richest gold-bearing rivers. Please note access over Skippers Bridge is currently closed due to long-term maintenance and safety works. Due to the bridge closure access to the school house and cemetery is also unavailable. Tours now operate to permitted points within the canyon, with alternate additional scenic and historical stops included.

      • Child: 4-14 years (Please advise age and if a booster seat is required)
      • Children aged 0-3 years are free (Please advise age and if an infant/booster seat is required).
      • Children under 14 must be accompanied by a participating adult
      • Change your booking up to 24 hours before the start time of your experience
      • Changes are not permitted within 24 hours of your experience
      • Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

      A minimum of 3 participants are required for morning departure; 2 for a confirmed departure in the afternoon. Minimum 4 on NZ public holidays.

      In the event of rain or inclement weather your experience will still go ahead unless contacted by the experience provider

      Skippers Canyon Tour

      [Employee of redballoon] Absolutely loved our 4WD tour through skippers canyon! Loved that it was a small group, our guide was super knowledgeable about the area and we felt very safe in the 4WD & it was fun going down the skippers road! We also got to go gold panning & visited the historic school. Highly recommend adding this to your Queenstown must do activities!
