On the day of your kayak experience, you’ll begin by meeting one of our experienced guides, who will decide which part of the Kaik?ura Peninsula to explore. This will depend on factors such as weather conditions, wildlife movement, and the experience level of the paddlers on the day. From there, your qualified sea kayak guide will provide a safety briefing and teach some basic paddling techniques before you head out onto the water. Once you’re comfortable in your top-of-the-line kayak, your adventure begins! You’re guaranteed to see New Zealand fur seals and may even have chance encounters with other marine life along the way. The focus, however, is on the resident fur seal colony — watch as they hunt octopus, bask on the rocks, and playfully swim around your kayak. After your time on the water, you’ll return to the launch site to wrap up a truly memorable experience.

This experience is part of the Responsible Range as Kaik?ura Kayaks holds a Qualmark Gold endorsement and was the very first Friend of the Sea sustainable dolphin and whale watching operator in New Zealand and the first kayak operator ever certified by Friend of the Sea. Kayaks hold a marine mammal viewing permit for Seal, Dolphin & Whales

Important information

Session Length

This experience is available 7 days a week, all year round, weather permitting
The total experience runs for 3 hours, with approximately 90 minutes spent on the water including about 30 minutes interacting with the fur seals

Guidelines

We can accommodate almost anyone. You dont need any paddling experience for our tour as your guide will demonstrate the various paddling techniques used - it is quickly and easily learnt and gives you a very rewarding outcome. Non-swimmers are welcome. Open to all ages from 3 years old, families most welcome.

Cancellation

Change your booking up to 48 hours before the start time of your experience
Changes are not permitted within 48 hours of your experience
Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

Weather

Sea kayaking may be cancelled due to wind and sea conditions. This is however, somewhat dependant on the experience level of the participant. In the case of poor weather, we will reschedule your experience for a later date.

Dress Code

A hat, sunglasses, long sleeve thermal top, board shorts or quick dry long pants, water friendly sandals or trainers are recommended. No jeans!

Other Info

You will need to sign a customer declaration prior to participating in the experience. All kayakers will be provided with the necessary equipment.

This experience takes place in Kaikoura, South Island, which is 2 hours north of Christchurch, NZ.

Fantastic experience. We had a real gem of a afternoon on the water. The male dolphins were showing off and puttting on great aerial performances for us when they werent zig zagging across the front of our kayak. We had a great guide with local knowledge and he even air dropped some great video clips to us from the day. A must do Thanks from Darryl & Sue

The Fur Seals were good to see up close but the real highlight of the trip was kayaking amongst a very large group of ever playful dolphins who seemed to enjoy our company as much as we enjoyed theirs.
