Explore the flagship trail of the Remutaka Cycle Trail by mountain bike and discover the rich rail history and natural beauty of the Remutaka Ranges.
You will be picked up from either Wellington Port (cruise ship guests only) at 9.15am, or Wellington Train Station (main entrance, all other guests) at 9.30am and shuttled to either Maymorn (for a 25-35km, slightly more challenging ride) or Kaitoke (for an 18-28km easy ride). You’ll be fitted with a mountain bike and helmet, adjusted to your height and riding preferences.
Start your adventure with a very gradual incline through native bush. Pass through tunnels (headlights provided!) and over bridges, while checking out the information boards which tell the story of the enormous task constructing the old fell railway system.
Reach the summit of the trail - a large grassy plateau perfect for a picnic and drink from your provided lunch - then enjoy a fun and easy descent to Cross Creek in the Wairarapa, surrounded by some of NZ's most scenic farmland.
You can either wait for the shuttle home at Cross Creek, or continue biking 10km to Featherston, and be picked up at The Royal Hotel before heading back to Wellington Station (arriving approx. 3.30-3.45pm) or Wellington Port (arriving approx. 3.45-4.00pm). Please note: if you are on a cruise ship, we pick you up direct from the Port at 9.15am. We cannot wait for late arrivals - make sure you are there on time otherwise the shuttle will leave without you! We arrive back at Port between 3.45pm - 4pm. Please check that your sailing times allow for these timings, we will not be held responsible if you miss your boat!
Please wear casual, comfortable clothing with suitable footwear.
