Feel like you've stepped into a painting during this two hour nature safari in the spectacular Wild Side Conservation area. Learn about the area's rich history, native flora and fauna and Pohatu's unique penguin conservation efforts as you wind though the picturesque roads.

Witness Mother Nature's splendour during this two hour nature safari in the award-winning Wild Side Conservation area. Departing Akaroa, wind down the picturesque roads and uncover unparalleled views of Akaroa Harbour, the outer coast, farm land and forested hillsides. Along the journey, your expert guide will provide informative commentary about the rich history of Akaroa and the Banks Peninsula, its native flora and fauna and Pohatu's unique penguin conservation program. Upon arrival in Pohatu Bay, receive a warm welcome from the farm's friendly pet sheep, who will be nudging your hands for treats. In season, you'll get to see white flippered penguins up close as you wander around the bay monitoring nesting sites. If you're lucky, you may even get the chance to see some of their rehabilitation efforts like supplemental feeding and swim therapy.

  • Departs at 1:30pm
  • This tour is not wheelchair friendly
  • Most rehabilitation occurs mid-November through mid-February and depending on the day and only shown to select groups to limit crowding penguins
  • Change your booking up to 24 hours before the start time of your experience
  • Changes are not permitted within 24 hours of your experience
  • Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

The minivan holds a maximum of nine passengers.

Great time with young child

We've seen so much and also learnt a lot in those 2 hours. The guide was very friendly and approachable and all info given were easy to understand for all ages. Feeding the sheep and seeing the penguins was a great experience for our daughter and us ^-^ If you're in Akaroa take the time to do this trip.
