Enjoy a comfortable fast boat cruise on the crystal clear waters of Lake Wanaka to the remote Mou Waho Island nature reserve, home of the lake on an island in a lake.

Mou Waho is a predator free Department of Conservation reserve and home to numerous native birds that are not found on the mainland. Here you can see first-hand results of conservation efforts including the rare flightless Buff Weka (extinct on the mainland since 1920), the wood pigeon and the native falcon.

A two hour guided nature walk is included which takes you up to a lake right on top of the island and magnificent mountain and lake scenery in every direction. This is rated as one of the top activities by visitors to Wanaka and not to be missed.

Enjoy the outstanding views as your guide shares some of the fascinating history of this entrancing island.

  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your cruise departure
  • Please allow 3 hours for this experience
  • Please wear outdoor footwear and bring a warm jacket
  • An average level of mobility is advised for this trip
  • The island walk is not compulsory. If you wish, you can remain on the boat enjoying the silence and the scenery
  • Change your booking up to 48 hours before the start time of your experience
  • Changes are not permitted within 48 hours of your experience
  • Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

A minimum of four participants is required for the cruise to proceed. The vessel can carry up to 28 passengers.

In the event of adverse weather the operator may cancel the cruise.

Please wear outdoor shoes and clothing appropriate to the season.

Good Walk and Views

If travelling in winter rug up as no heating on the vessel. Was a good experience to see Mou Waho Island and walk to the peak and look over the mountains surrounding. Would be a great trip to do in summer on a clear day. Easy walk up the mountain with stops along the way to talk about flora & fauna.
