Pack a picnic and cruise into the outer Queen Charlotte Sound, stroll along the beach and native bush to a majestic waterfall and learn about the Maori and European history of Ship Cove/Meretoto.
Renowned as one of the first encounters between Maori people and Europeans, and Captain James Cook's favourite anchorage, Ship Cove/Meretoto is a place oozing with rich history. Departing from Picton, you will cruise into the outer Queen Charlotte Sound/Totaranui to this historic place and begin exploring its undeniable beauty. Walk along the beach and through native bush to a picturesque waterfall where you're welcome to enjoy a picnic you packed. You'll discover why Ship Cove/Meretoto was important to both local Maori and European settlers, and learn more about their interactions from interpretive signs. If you're feeling active, embark on a trek along the Queen Charlotte Track to the top of the hill for expansive views of Motuara Island and Resolution Bay. Alternatively, you can be dropped off at Resolution Bay in the morning and walk to Ship Cove/Meretoto from there.
