This is an eco experience like no other. Travel to the stunningly beautiful Kapiti Island and walk the tracks, picnic on the beach, swim in the bay or just sit in the solitude surrounded by rare and endangered birds, flora and fauna.
Kapiti Island is an island bird sanctuary and one of New Zealand’s oldest and most accessible nature reserve. It is home to a number of native birds, including takahe, North Island k?kako, brown teal, stitchbird (hihi), North Island saddleback (tieke), tomtit (miromiro), fantail (piwakawaka), morepork (ruru), weka and North Island robin (toutouwai).
On this Kapiti Island day trip, you will meet your guide in the morning at Paraparaumu Beach and travel by boat for 20 minutes across the Rauoterangi Channel to Kapiti Island. Here, your guide will give you a brief introduction to the island including stories of local Maori history and the Ngati Toa people.
From there, the island is yours! You can wander the tracks, spot the birds, walk in absolute serenity, swim in the bay, hear from your guide or just or just sit in solitude. Whales can also often be spotted off the island during their migration.
This is a great way to spend your day exploring this incredible nature reserve and rediscovering the rich ecology of New Zealand.
Once this experience has been confirmed, changes are at the discretion of the experience provider and arranged directly with them according to their policy.
There is a maximum of 90 customers per day over three sailings. No minimum number is required to book.
The trip is subject to weather and sea conditions. Trips do go ahead in light rain as the island is stunning in the mist and rain. If sea conditions are too rough or for forecast of heavy rain, your experience will be cancelled.
Good walking shoes are required. It is recommended you take sun hats in summer and a jacket in spring, and swimming togs and a towel for that important dip in the ocean.
This is a seasonal experience operating from 1 September to 30 May. Available over the winter season for group bookings of over 15 only.
This experience takes place on Kapiti Island, departing Paraparaumu.
