Experience the wonder and magic of Antarctica without leaving Christchurch, at one of New Zealand's best, award-winning tourist attractions.

This interactive attraction is where you can see rescued Little Blue Penguins, ride an Antarctic Hagglunds, immerse yourself in another world with a 4D Theatre experience, brave -18C windchills in an Antarctic Storm, while also learning about life in modern day Antarctica and Scott Base.

Storm Experience:

Shelter in an ice cave while you brave a simulated Antarctic Storm with a wind chill of -18 degrees Celsius. Warm jackets and overshoes are provided, but it is advisable not to wear jandals or open-toed shoes.

Hagglunds Field Trip:

Climb aboard a Hagglunds for a fun-filled ride on this incredible all-terrain, amphibious, Antarctic vehicle. The ride is highly authentic and simulates the conditions scientists will experience riding in a Hagglunds across the ice, over mounds, up and down hills, across crevasses and through water! Please note the minimum height to ride the Hagglunds is 1.2m.

Penguin Rescue:

Experience New Zealand's first combined indoor/outdoor penguin viewing area which allows visitors to view Little Blue Penguins in a Banks Peninsula natural-themed environment that can be accessed on two levels. The penguins who live here are birds that have been rescued and cared for, some since they were chicks. Due to physical disabilities that have left them defenceless, many of them would not have survived on their own back in the wild.

4D Theatre:

Experience a simulated cruise to Antarctica with spectacular scenery and realistic animal close ups, together with the excitement of the special 4D effects that will excite your senses and enhance your experience! These shows include realistic 3D imagery, and 4D special effects of seat movement, water spray, air bursts and bubbles.

Antarctic Gallery:

This exhibition space is where you'll learn about the geology, wildlife and science being undertaken in Antarctica.

HD Theatre:

The Climate Canary plays on the massive HD screen and features breathtaking scenery, while looking at climate change, how New Zealand and Antarctica are connected, and what we can do about it.

The Hagglunds ride is not recommended for people with heart conditions, back or neck pain or if pregnant. Participants must be over 1.2m to ride the Hagglunds.

A great day out

So easy to spend a day here! Haaglund ride is best saved for last. Lovely to meet the Huskies. The 4D film is a treat for all. Don’t miss the penguin feeding times if you can help it as that is always amazing. Shout out to Cindy for sorting our family and Lindsay was such a wonderful crew member too. 10/10 Looking forward to bringing the niblings when they are older.
