Explore a maze of ice caves and crevasses as you hike the wonder-filled Franz Josef Glacier. Enjoy a scenic flight to the Franz Josef airport before boarding a helicopter to the upper Franz Josef icefall, where your two hour hike through this spellbinding region begins.
Prepare to immerse in a dazzling icy wonderland as you spend the day at one of New Zealand's steepest glaciers, Franz Josef Glacier. Your adventure begins with a scenic flight from Queenstown to Franz Josef Airport, where you'll fly over the spectacular Southern Alps studded with over 3000 glistening glaciers. Upon arrival, you'll be run through a safety briefing before boarding the helicopter for a flight into a deep part of the glacier, passing over mystical icefalls and waterfalls to land at the upper Franz Josef icefall. Here, you will be fitted with crampons for your two hour hike, exploring magnificent ice caves and experiencing firsthand the ever-changing wonders of this snowy landscape. Following your hike, you will return to the airport by helicopter to meet your plane for the return journey to Queenstown.
Not suitable for children under 35kg. Participants over 120kg will incur extra charges on the helicopter portion of this tour. Guests over 150kgs will be unable to take part due to weight restrictions on aircraft.
Minimum of three participants.
This experience is weather dependant. Please call the provider on 0800 777 922 one hour prior to your departure for a final weather check. Should the weather impact your ability to do the Franz Josef glacier hike, they have the flexibility to move to the Tasman Glacier on the eastern side of the mountain, which is usually more sheltered.
Please dress as you would for a regular hike, no jeans. Specialist equipment and waterproof pants/jackets are provided.
