Combine the excitement of walking on the Fox Glacier with the thrill of fly-in, fly-out helicopter flights during this Heli Hike experience. Your helicopter approach allows you to access and explore a part of the glacier where its forces work hardest, often creating spectacular ice caves and arches.

Thrills and chills abound on this journey! Equipped with leather walking boots and all the equipment required for your trip, you will board the helicopter for your first flight over the pinnacles of the lower icefall where the ice is in constant motion. Your landing site on the ice is a remote and exceptionally beautiful part of the glacier where you will see the stunning Victoria Falls, the melt river from the hidden Victoria glacier. At this stage, you'll be outfitted with crampons, specially designed for these ice conditions before you follow the ice steps cut by your guide for an exploration of the amazing ice formations. Your highly experienced guide will get you up close to impressive ice formations and safely lead you across the glacier. Each departure is a true voyage of exploration; there are so many changing features that your guide will often find something new to show you. After approximately three hours on the ice, you will take your return helicopter flight back to base.

Important information

  • Please allow four hours for this experience
  • This experience allows for up to three hours on the ice (weather permitting)
  • Tours run at 8:50 am and 11:50 am
  • Please check in 20 minutes prior to departure
  • No experience is required
  • Moderate fitness required
  • Minimum age nine years
  • Disk Disclosure Waiver is required before departure
  • Change your booking up to 24 hours before the start time of your experience
  • Changes are not permitted within 24 hours of your experience
  • Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

Minimum three and maximum of 11 participants per trip.

Spectators are not permitted. There is a gift shop at our base and there are cafes close by for those not participating in the experience.

This trip is weather dependable, the final decision if a trip to go ahead or not is made 10 minutes prior to check in time.

Please wear three or four layers of warm upper-body clothing. Comfortable trousers or shorts in summer (no jeans). For winter trips bring a warm hat and gloves.

Due to helicopter safety requirements, each passenger is limited to ONE item with a maximum carry-on weight of up to 3 kg. If you choose to take your own bag, the following criteria will be used to assess suitability: Maximum weight of 3 kg; Closes securely; No excessive strapping and/or external pockets; No large bags. If your bag is deemed to be unsuitable by us, we will provide you with a bag for the duration of your trip. Camera tripods are not suitable for our general Flying Fox: The Heli Hike trip.
