Departing from the icon Dunedin Railway Station, the Taieri Gorge Railway takes its 116km journey through some of New Zealand’s most ever-changing and stunning scenery. Travel form the southern end of Dunedin city towards the Wingatui junction before turning off onto the Taieri Gorge track, a narrow and deep gorge carved out by the Taieri River over the course of history.
Travel through ten tunnels and countless bridges and viaducts while your train manager shares the story of nature and history of the region. Stop or slow down at various points of interest along the way for photo opportunities of the natural wonders of the region along with the engineering feats.
Wear comfortable, casual clothes. Trips feature the possibility for you to disembark the train on various points of interest, so flat shoes are recommended. Please do not forget to take your camera!
