  • Experience a unique self-guided hike to Tarawera Falls

Get ready for a day of sighting impressive volcanic craters and mystical waterfalls! Continue with a self-guided hike through native forest to the magnificent Tarawera Falls.

What's Included?

  • Helicopter flight to and landing on Mount Tarawera
  • Helicopter transfer to Tapahoro (Lake Tarawera)
  • Self-guided hike to Tarawera Falls
  • Scenic boat transfer from Tapahoro to the landing Lake Tarawera
  • Return vehicle transfers to the Rotorua City Lakefront

Experience the sight of the largest volcanic eruption in New Zealand's living memory during a magical scenic flight. Boarding the helicopter at Rotorua, your pilot will fly over the Lakes District and towards Mt Tarawera, offering you with privileged views of the spectacular craters and domes formed by the 1886 eruption. Be wowed by the amazing and intricate geography below you, before experiencing a volcanic landing.

Re-board the helicopter for a short flight to Tapahoro, where you'll touch down on the shores of Lake Tarawera. Here, begin your self-guided hike following the crystal-clear Tarawear River, beneath imposing bluffs and towering over native forest. The trail continues past a series of magnificent cascades each more impressive than the last, until you arrive at Tarawera Falls, flowing from the middle of a cliff through a passage carved in time. It's one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the country. After retracing your steps back to Tapahoro, you will meet your return boat transfer across Lake Tarawera to the Tarawera outlet. From here, you will be escorted back to Rotorua Lakefront.
