Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is a mainland ecological island. Surrounded by the world’s longest multi-species predator-proof fence, this ancient forest offers a sanctuary for populations of many of the most endangered species – from birds to bats, frogs to reptiles, tuatara to giant weta.
Step through the pest-proof gate into another world where ancient New Zealand forest towers majestically above well maintained walking tracks and the air is filled with birdsong. Experience the ancient feel of an old-growth, native forest protected from introduced pests by the world’s longest multi-species predator-proof fence.
Your guided forest walk will be enriched as you are accompanied by a passionate and knowledgeable guide who will share the stories of Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari with you as you explore the beautiful walking tracks of Te Tui a Tane - the Southern Enclosure.
Take in the majesty of this indigenous forest and try to spot the numerous bird species which make the maunga - mountain their home. Spend time in the clearing where k?k? like to hang out and take an optional walk up the viewing tower for a unique perspective of the forest canopy from above.
You will also have access to explore the sanctuary further at your own pace with an Explorer Pass as a part of your ticket cost.
You will be entering a biosecurity controlled area and will be required to abide by protocol to ensure the protection of the environment.
