New Zealand may be an adrenaline-junkie's dream but that's not the only thing it offers. It is rich in fascinating history, tradition, and a mesmerizing Maori culture. Visit a Maori village for a fun, interactive and enjoyable experience with music, dance and food.
Your hosts will collect you from your Rotorua accommodation and take you to a traditional Maori village where you will learn about the Maori migration, tradition and protocol. A chief will be selected to represent your tribe and guide you onto the site by way of a powhiri; an ancient ceremony of welcome.
Enter the living village as it comes alive with the sights, sounds and activity of days gone by, including facial tattooing, weaving, carving and demonstrations on how our food was cooked and preserved many years ago. See, touch, take time and talk to the local people as you wander through the village - you will be invited to participate in stick games, warrior training, learn the poi and you will also have the opportunity to be taught how to perform the fearsome haka!
Witness the earth being scraped carefully away from the Hangi pit by your Maori chef, to reveal baskets laden with a sumptuous, mouth watering feast, which has been cooked beneath the ground on hot stones.
At the heart of the village, enter the ancestral Meeting House and relax as the family entertains you with a powerful cultural performance including action songs, short and long poi, weaponry displays, stick games and the world famous "haka" - a Maori war dance.
The sharing of food is an important part of the Maori custom - so you are invited to join in for the traditional Hangi feast, followed by typical New Zealand dessert. The evening draws to an end with the Poroporoaki - the official closing ceremony.
