Immerse yourself in the gorgeous town of Akaroa, nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano. Explore the village's charm, relax over lunch at an award-winning harbourside cafe, visit a working sheep farm and admire spectacular scenic vistas as you drive through the Banks Peninsula.
A sleepy town sitting in the crater of an extinct volcano, Akaroa is rich in both French and Maori history and is a wonderful place to explore. Your day begins with a scenic drive through the Banks Peninsula on a high summit route, offering views of rolling valleys, verdant farmlands and glimpses of the Southern Alps. Upon arrival, stroll through the charming streets and discover the township's arts and craft stores, or visit the museum and peek into the town's history. After lunch at an award-winning waterside cafe, drive to Paula Bay Farm for a delightful look into life on a working sheep farm. Marvel at the working sheep dogs, watch a sheep shearing demonstration and hear stories from the owner. On the journey back to Christchurch, you will visit the Cheese Factory at Barry's Bay if time permits.
