The Sleeping God canyon tour is a vertical descent of over three hundred metres down a steep set of waterfalls involving abseils/rappels of up to 80 metres, exhilarating water slides and jumps as high as 14 metres into deep dark pools which are guaranteed to thrill the most intrepid explorer!

The journey starts at the bottom of the valley floor with a brief korero (talk) about the area history, including the pre-European and Kauri logging history.

Then the hikoi (walk) begins as you ascend to the top of the river and into the top of the canyon where the views are grand and the experience of what you are about to do finally hits you! Put our gear on and start the descent after receiving safety instructions, an abseiling lesson and a traditional karakia (prayer) before dropping over the first 30 metre waterfall.

You will be challenged to do things that you may have never believed you would ever do, however, this does have the consequence of a positively mind blowing and unforgettable day out. The tour is aimed at people with a real taste for adventure and a good level of fitness (comparable to a day of hiking). Big jumps are optional, abseils/rappels are not.

The Thames Coromandel region is rich in both Maori and European history, and your guides will endeavour to share that history with you as you weave your way through the adventure. The geology of the area is spectacular in itself as the volcanic rock offers a great platform for steep waterfalls and cliff faces to marvel at and of course play in.

At the end of the day you will feel like you need a good feed so there's a post trip BBQ at the end for you to satisfy your hunger. Then it's time to head home for, hot shower, your favourite beverage and a good night’s sleep!

You'll also receive photos from your guides who have been capturing all your adventures on camera throughout the day.
